In March of 2022, we were invited to visit a friend on Saltspring Island and stay overnight. We had a great time catching up after not seeing each other for a few years. During our adventure, our friend suggested we go to Burgoyne Bay (Xwaagw'um) to hunt for things to imprint. This Regional Park is one of the largest blocks of protected areas in the Gulf Islands and has incredible views of Burgoyne Bay, Mount Maxwell and Bayne. On our walk, we came across a few Osoberry shrubs. The Osoberry is a native shrub on Vancouver Island and has a sweetness that attracts birds and bears to feast on its berries. The leaves also turned out to be perfect for our jewellery!
We would like to acknowledge that the Indigenous People have been at Burgoyne Valley for thousands of years. Burgoyne Bay contains 11 documented archaeological sites and many other sites of spiritual and cultural significance connected to the creation story of the Hul’qumi’num People.
