The Arbutus Tree sheds its papery bark and grows along the coast of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. They grow on the edge of the land near the ocean in rough and rocky conditions. They twist and turn so they can grow in many directions to reach the sunlight and each tree takes on its own unique shape. Their branches and leaves are tossed by the wild winds of the BC Coast but they stand strong and keep persevering to grow and become magnificent trees. It's for this reason that the Arbutus tree symbolizes strength, beauty and uniqueness.
We found this piece of Arbutus branch washed up and weathered on the beach on Galiano Island during our visit with friends. Its amazing past has left cracks in the branch so we could share the story and beauty with you.
