We really enjoyed learning about kelp once we found this piece of holdfast which is the root that anchors to rocks. Also, did you know that kelp is not a plant? It's called a Heterkont and known for its high growth rate that makes underwater forests in shallow water and is home to all kinds of sea creatures. We think they are really neat and love seeing them on our little West Coast adventures.
This past June, we did our first camping trip of the summer at French Beach just past Sooke along the West Coast of the island. We brought our pups and every morning we walked out to the beach using a small trail from our campsite. The beach was full of cool treasures left from the high tide. In a little pile of driftwood, we found this cool kelp.
